If you’re setting up a medical center, purchasing second-hand imaging equipment is a great way to cut down on costs. But before you commit to a refurbished MRI, make sure you know the right questions to ask from your dealer.

Refurbished MRI shopping points

#1: Check for availability

Some refurbished MRI dealers list an assortment of radiology equipment that they get from a broker; meaning that the X-ray machine pictured in the dealer’s website might not actually be among the “physical” inventory, and the price indicated may be subject to change. Before signing on the dotted line for a used MRI, ask if the company you’re buying from has “exclusive rights” to sell refurbished medical equipment.

#2: Ask about help with installation

So, you’ve selected a good second-hand MRI, and the price seems right. What next? Ask if they offer assistance with shipping of the product, setting up your refurbished MRI in your medical facility, and all the other details that come up, such as providing the right FDA paperwork associated with your specific imaging equipment, calibration, and IT integration. A qualified dealer of refurbished medical imaging equipment should have a product management team in place for inquiries and hands-on installation, and most important- they should be easily reached by telephone.

#3: Ask if they offer a shared risk program

What kind of insurance policy is available for your purchase? If the company offers a “shared risk program,” then you won’t end up overpaying on your service contract. There’s no guarantee that you’ll save money in the long run (although you might), but at least you’re protected against losing money on the deal.

#4: Ask about trade-in-value

In a few years, you may be ready to trade in your refurbished MRI. Ask if you will receive a fair market “trade-in” value for the MRI you purchase today towards a more recent piece of imaging equipment tomorrow.

#5: What about financing?

Find out if you can save money by renting or leasing a used MRI, rather than purchasing it outright.
