Madison Medical Construction Corp is proud to congratulate Juan Hernandez, winner of the 2014 ASC Student Competition, Alternates league.  Juan, site superintendent for MMCC, finished first place as construction project manager for the ASC competition. Recently, the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) held their annual competition in Reno, Nevada. For the contest, student contractors were graded for their performance in a construction project chosen exclusively for their team. The mission for each team included studying the proposed plan; devising a bid and construction schedule; determining any potential obstacles that may interfere with construction, and addressing those issues. Each team received a set of blueprints for a construction project; for Juan, the assignment centered on a hospital courtyard, a real-life medical construction project, in which he, as project manager, was responsible for mitigating potential safety risks and other complications while adhering to time constraints. “I just want to thank my teammates and the good work we all put in to get the win,” Juan said. “Also, I would like to thank Madison Medical Construction and my boss Sam (Socher) for giving me the knowledge and experience to prepare me for this competition.” Juan is currently finishing his final semester at California State University, Long Beach, majoring in construction management. The goal of the ASC competition is to prepare students for actual scenarios that occur regularly in the construction field.  Participants were evaluated for their ability to complete their given project based on the following skills:
  • Ability to estimate cost accurately
  • Scheduling
  • Work management
  • Expertise in contracting
  • Time management
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Focus on teamwork
The Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) is a learning establishment for construction professionals, providing a richer, more goal-oriented approach to education in the field of medical contracting, construction, and project management.
